Wow, what an incredibly busy but amazing week we have had in Year 5 this week
Thank you to all of the parents who attended the Festive Sing. Your smiles and applause were immensely encouraging for the Year 5 students. Also, thank you for attending the Y5 open afternoon in such large numbers. Your children grasped the opportunity to celebrate and share all of the wonderful learning from this term.
A huge well done to 5B and 5D who helped lead the Year 1 and Year 2 Sports Days on Sunday. The children did an amazing job!
In English this week, we have been busy reading our class text, Wolf Brother, and using it as a stimulus to create our own chapters. To do this, we stopped reading at a cliffhanger and imagined what might happen next using our knowledge of characterisation and storylines.
In humanities, we have been completing our zigzag books on prehistory and reflecting on our learning so far this term.
In DT, The children have continued learning about joining and decorative stitches in design technology. They have now begun creating their final pieces which they are very excited about.
In maths, we have been learning how to use the formal written methods for multiplication and division.

In English and humanities we have been learning all about the periods of prehistory, the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. To help us learn effectively, we started the week by reading all about each period, discussing our findings, and then answering comprehension questions. Following these lessons, we focussed on developing and using our research and note-taking skills to find and record key information. Finally, we took the information to create our own informative sentences and produced amazing zigzag books.
In design technology, the children have continued learning about joining and decorative stitches. The children will learn these skills in the coming weeks to create their own Oman-inspired textile landscape.
In maths, as part of our multiplication and division unit, we have been learning about common factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers.

We have been reading our fiction key quality text, Wolf Brother, in English. The children continue to enjoy reading the book and linking it to their writing. This week we have been writing character descriptions.
In science, we have been learning about life cycles and reviewing our prior learning by discussing and creating life cycles of mammals and birds.
In design technology, the children have begun their new textiles unit in which they are learning to create joining and decorative stitches. The children will learn these skills in the coming weeks to create their own Oman-inspired textile landscape.
In humanities, we have been learning about prehistory, particularly the Stone Age. We have been developing and using research skills to discover how settlements, tools and monuments changed during the time periods.

In English, we have been reading our fiction key quality text, Wolf Brother. The children have been enthralled by the book thus far and cannot wait to see what happens next. We are using the book to stimulate writing. This week we have been developing our sentence structure and phrasing to help us write effective character descriptions.
In science, we have been learning about life cycles and reviewing our prior learning by discussing and creating life cycles of amphibians.
In design technology, the children have begun their new textiles unit in which they are learning to create joining and decorative stitches. The children will learn these skills in the coming weeks to create their own Oman-inspired textile landscape.
To help share and celebrate our residential trip, the Year 5 children have been mastering their lines in preparation for the Key Stage 2 Assembly on Thursday. The children are very excited about performing in front of the other year groups and have been working incredibly hard. Thank you to the parents for supporting the children in learning their lines outside of school.

This week, Year 5 have had an amazing time taking their learning into the field. We have visited many places that have helped deepen our knowledge, skills and understanding of Oman’s special geography and history.
Most importantly, we have had a lovely time together as a community. We have demonstrated strong collaboration skills, responsibility, motivation, and confidence. These are some of the cornerstones of the learning ethos in BSM. The teachers and instructors were incredibly impressed and proud of the children’s achievements.
No formal homework this week as we will be on our residential. Please keep drawing and identifying the phase of the moon each evening. Please continue to make sure that your children read too.

In English, we have been identifying the features of anecdotes, reading and giving feedback on the teachers’ migration stories, and writing our own. We had a lot of fun doing this.
In science, we learned all about the 8 phases of the moon, including a lot of new vocabulary. The children acted out the cycle and were given the homework of observing the phases of the moon each night.
In art, the children continued to learn about prehistory and enjoyed creating their own prehistoric art.
In humanities, we revised and demonstrated our knowledge of the 3 rock types. We also used a binary tree to classify different rock samples based on their properties. We are excited about taking this learning into our residential fieldwork in a couple of weeks.

On Monday, we took the children into the Oryx Theatre to share a presentation with them about the Year 5 residential which is happening at the end of this month. The children are incredibly excited and asked some excellent questions. I am sure they have shared things with you as a result.
In science, we have been learning all about how and why we experience day and night on Earth. We have been looking at globes and using light sources to mimic the sun’s rays bouncing off the Earth’s surface whilst revisiting the anti-clockwise rotation of the Earth on its axis.
In humanities, we have been learning all about latitude and linking it with our learning in maths around angles. We have been studying latitudinal lines, drawing their attention to Oman, the equator, and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
In PSHE, we have been listening to the children’s migration stories and linking these stories with the work we have been covering in English on anecdotes.
In maths, we have been learning all about angles. We have been identifying, comparing, and measuring angles. We have then transferred this knowledge to the measurements we use for latitudinal lines.
In English, we have now completed our book, Coming to England. This week we have been learning about anecdotes and thinking of our own. Next, we will begin to look carefully at the features of autobiographies.

In humanities, we have been learning all about the history of Oman. We used this new knowledge to create a historical timeline using our knowledge of chronological sequencing, labelling, and caption writing.
In PSHE, we have been creating poems to support our work on Floella Benjamin’s Coming to England and our focus on migration.
In maths, we continued to learn about addition and subtraction. We are beginning to master our knowledge of subtraction by exchanging (primarily through 0). The children are now beginning to use rounding and approximating to check their calculations. We will move on to using this understanding to help us break down and answer word problems.
In English, we have now completed our book, Coming to England. This week we have been learning about anecdotes and thinking of our own. Next, we will begin to look carefully at the features of autobiographies.
In art, we have now completed our unit of study on Sandra Silberzweig. The children have had a wonderful time learning about the artist’s life and the work she created. Moreover, they enjoyed creating their own pieces based on her styles and techniques.

In science, we have been learning about the heliocentric and geocentric models of the solar system. The children learned about what people from different cultures around the world thought at different times in history and discussed why they may have had these ideas and how these ideas shaped what we think today.
In humanities, we enjoyed reading a story called ‘Bird Man’ which is based in pre-historic Oman. The children enjoyed learning from the story and discussing elements that they recognised in terms of vocabulary, places and cultural rituals mentioned.
In maths, we have begun our new unit, addition and subtraction. We started the unit by learning some mental strategies to help us calculate quickly and accurately. We also covered formal written methods for both addition and subtraction for numbers up seven digits.
In English, we have continued to read our autobiographical book, Coming to England. We have used our knowledge of informal letters as well as planned and created our own responses to the ones that Marmie sent to us last week.
We are approaching the end of our unit on Sandra Silberzweig in art. The children explored patterns and shapes, selected their best examples and have now started adding colour to their work using watercolours, colouring pencils or pastels.

It has been another busy week in Year 5. During PSHE we held student leader elections and would like to congratulate all those who gave a presentation and applied to be a student leader. Our congratulations and best wishes go to the elected student leaders for Year 5.

In English, we have continued to read our autobiographical book, Coming to England. We have looked at the features of informal letters and are using a letter from Marmie to Floella and her sister to practise persuasion in the form of a letter in reply.
In art, we continued working on our pieces inspired by Sandra Silberzweig. The children explored patterns and shapes, selected their best examples and have now started adding colour to their work using water colours, colouring pencils or pastels.

We have had a wonderful week this week in Year 5.
In science, the whole of Year 5 went into the Oryx Theatre to participate in an awe and wonder activity based on our new unit, Earth and Space. We shared what we already knew about the topic and what we wanted to discover in the coming weeks.
In humanities, we have started our Marhaba Oman unit where we began learning about Oman’s location in the region and world.
In maths, we have started our unit on place value. The children had lots of fun playing games whilst they learned about Roman numerals and we also covered the importance of digits to 1,000,000.
In English, we have started our unit called Coming to England. This is a famous autobiographical text written by Floella Benjamin. The children had a wonderful time learning about Floella and her home country, Trinidad. We worked on our summarising skills and wrote our own description of Floella’s home.
In art, we began our Sandra Silberzweig unit by studying her life and the work that she has become famous for.

First of all, welcome back to BSM. The Year 5 team have had a wonderful week getting to know the children and helping them make the best start in their classes. I would like to share a warm welcome to the new families that have joined the BSM community, too. All of the children have made an excellent start and have settled incredibly quickly. Thank you for supporting them with this; we understand that moving country and/or school is challenging.
This week has involved playing lots of ‘getting to know you’ games. We have also been thinking about our happy places in the world and in school. The children discussed and shared their thoughts and feelings with their friends.
As part of our bring your own device programme, we have learned how to stay safe when using technology, especially the internet. We have discussed private information and how to be a responsible member of the Y5 BSM Community when online.
