Lesson EIGHT

Dedications

VIRTUAL LESSON #8 - Dedications

May 11th - May 15th

This week’s artist is YOU!! …well, You, and someone “Special” :) Have you ever noticed inside the front of a book you will see a page all by itself, that says something like “This book is dedicated to…”

(I’ll give you a ‘Bonus’ if you can guess who the Author of THIS book is?!)

Have you ever “Dedicated” an artwork to someone? Maybe not “officially”, but I bet you’ve made a piece of art and given it to someone special, or made an artwork while you were thinking about someone you care about.

Examples of Dedications are everywhere, you just don’t always know the story behind the work. This colorful pile of “stuff” is one of my favorite examples of “Dedicated to..”

The stuff is a pile of CANDY . . 175 pounds worth of it, to be exact! It was put in the corner of a museum by an artist named Felix Gonzalez-Torres. He called it “Untitled” (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) and he dedicated it to his friend Ross. Anyone visiting the museum was welcome to take a piece of candy, and in this way remember his friend who had passed away.

Another example of Dedication is the following two portraits by Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent painted both of them as a token of friendship for Dr. Gachet, who was helping take care of Vincent at the end of his life.

Both paintings are now worth MILLIONS of dollars:)

Your 8th - and FINAL - Virtual Lesson is to:

  • Think of SOMEONE SPECIAL! For this assignment you can certainly choose anyone you’d like. Since our school year ended so strangely, away from all of our friends, I would LOVE IT if you chose someone from SCHOOL that you didn’t get to say “Good-Bye” to.

  • CREATE an Artwork, DEDICATED to that “Special Person”:)

  • Take a Picture of your creation. If you send it to Mr. R., he will share it with LOTS of people (and hopefully your Special Someone will get to see it that way). If you can send it to them, or save it to give to them later . . even better!

.. No other “Options” this week! Get CREATIVE with your Dedication Artwork, and make it one last good one to end our year!!

At the end of every school year, I always make 'one last' picture, and share a copy with every student. THIS picture is dedicated to YOU!!! (it's not even close to the same as sharing it in person, but I hope some of YOU find it, and enjoy!)

Again, when finished, feel free to send a digital picture to Mr. Reese (he'd LOVE to see your work!!)

Until next time . . STAY CREATIVE!!!

Your 'ole fuzzy' Art Teacher - Mr. R.
