Lesson Five

Georgia O'Keeffe

VIRTUAL LESSON #5 - Georgia O'Keeffe

April 20th - April 24th

This week’s artist is Georgia O’Keeffe. She was an American painter, in a time when most women were not artists. But times were changing, and Georgia followed her dreams to be a painter, eventually becoming one of America’s most FAMOUS artists!

Georgia was born in 1887 on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. She knew from an early age that she wanted to be a painter, and so she went to several art schools. She was even an Art Teacher from time to time:) She is mostly known for her paintings of New York City (where she lived for a while), for her paintings of the desert (where she also lived sometimes), and for her flower paintings.

Georgia continued painting her entire life . . pretty much all 98 years of it!! She received many awards for her artwork, and created 1,000s of incredible paintings to share with the world. She was truly a one of a kind person!

Since it’s Spring time, and the flowers are starting to bloom, this week’s assignment is going to focus on FLOWERS!

Your 5th Virtual Lesson is to:

  • Find a Flower. It can be a real one, which might mean heading outside to pick one .. PLEASE make sure you get permission before snipping someone’s "Prized Petunias"!!

You can also use a FAKE ONE if you can find it.

  • Once you have a flower (or flowers!?), DRAW IT!! Find a nice, clean piece of paper, grab a pencil, and try drawing what you see. Look at the details of the flower. Don’t be afraid of mistakes . . we’re ARTISTS, and we make them all the time! Either work with your ‘boo-boos’, or grab another sheet and try again:)

  • Finally, add some COLOR! Now, if you’re REALLY going to work like Georgia O’Keeffe, I’m guessing you’ll PAINT that drawing!? But if you don’t have any paint handy, use something else to color your flower. Crayons, pencils, markers will do nicely, but what about Fruit Juice . . or Food Coloring . . or something else you might have lying about?! And, don’t forget to color the BACKGROUND behind your flower!!

  • Finally, if you have a Camera or Phone, Take a Picture of your creation!! Share it with Mr. Reese (via email, works best!) with family, with friends:)

There aren’t too many “other ideas” for this week’s homework . . BUT, if you aren’t into Drawing and Painting a flower, you might try one of these instead:

  • Grab some Play-Doh or clay, and SCULPT your own flower. Again, think about the pieces of a flower, and how you might make those in your own sculpture.

  • Grab a Digital Camera or Cell Phone (with a camera!) and head outside to take a PHOTOGRAPH of the flowers you find (photographers are Artists too!!). Take as many as you’d like, but in the end, choose - and share - your Favorite ONE!

One final Video Clip . . a read-aloud of “My Name Is Georgia”.

Again, when finished, feel free to send a digital picture to Mr. Reese (he'd LOVE to see your work!!)

Until next time . . STAY CREATIVE!!!
