Lesson Two

Yayoi Kusama

VIRTUAL LESSON #2 - Yayoi Kasuma

March 23rd - March 27th

This week’s artist is one that I’ve never really shared with students before, but inspiration from one of our wonderful Kindergarten artists made me want to share Yayoi Kusama (say “Yah-yoee Koo-sah-mah” . . slowly at first!) Born in Japan in 1929 - that makes her How Old?? - Yayoi has had a long and productive Art career (even though her parents thought it was a BAD IDEA for her to be an Artist!?!) From films, paintings, sculptures to fashion and poetry . . you name it, she’s probably tried it. And when Yayoi tries something, she DEFINITELY puts her own STYLE into it!!

A short Video Clip of Yayoi Kusama, to help you learn all about her!

Your 2nd Virtual Lesson is to:

  • Think DOTS!! - For this week, it’s ALL about the DOT!! Doesn’t matter what materials you use . . whatever lets you create the best DOT! No lines, No other shapes . . just dots, DOTS, DOTS!!! (you get it, right!?)

  • CREATE - Once you have your favorite material (crayons, markers, paint, paper…) find something to put your new artwork on - cardboard, canvas, paper, an old wooden board??

  • Finally, if you have a Camera or Phone, Take a Picture of your creation!! Share it with Mr. Reese (via email, works best! and/or with family and friends:)

Another Video Clip . . once upon a time this idea of Kosuma’s inspired an Elementary “hallway project” where students covered the Art Hallway with sticky notes. Call it, Installation Art!?!

Now . . I’m NOT saying that you should cover everything in your house with DOTS this week (unless you get permission first, of course!!). But thinking “Outside the Box” and trying something different or unexpected is definitely the way to GROW as an artist.

Finally, if you feel like you’ve seen DOTS in artworks before, you’re not dreaming! Since the beginning of time people have loved making marks, and the good ole DOT has always been a favorite:) From Australian Aboriginal DOT paintings to the Pointillist artworks of the late 1800’s, DOTS are EVERYWHERE!!

So . . get going, and AMAZE us with your DOTS this week! Again, when finished, feel free to send a digital picture to Mr. Reese (he'd LOVE to see your work!!)

Until next time . . STAY CREATIVE!!!
