Lesson One

Andy Goldsworthy

VIRTUAL LESSON #1 - Andy Goldsworthy

March 16th - March 20th

One of my all-time favorite artists is British-born sculptor, photographer and environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy! Andy spends most of his time outdoors, putting natural objects (leaves, rocks, pinecones, flowers, ice pieces, and more) together in beautiful and fascinating ways. When he finishes his outdoor artworks, he takes a photograph of it .. and then leaves it to return to nature!? Does that seem strange to you?? Or does it sound . . INTERESTING?!

A short Video Clip of Andy Goldsworthy and his work . . to INSPIRE you!?!?

Your 1st Virtual Lesson is to:

  • Go outside!! - Choose a decent weather day, let someone know what you are up to, and go "Treasure Hunting". Spring time is a good for getting fresh air and finding all sorts of new surprises.

  • Build a Collection! - Carry a bag or bucket along and collect some natural things . . an armload of sticks, a basket full of pinecones, some same-sized rocks. Try to work with just ONE material at a time - it might make the next step easier?

  • CREATE!! - Put your pieces together (somewhere outdoors) in an artistic and creative way. Lines and Patterns work well. Arranging Colors sometimes works. There is no right or wrong answer to this creative challenge, so get a bit 'messy' and have fun!

  • Finally, if you have a Camera or Phone, Take a Picture of your creation!! Share it with Mr. Reese (via email, works best!) with family, with friends:) If you share it with your Art teacher he will add it to your Artsonia page if you have online permission!!

  • Leave your Artwork behind!! - Let someone else discover it some day . . they will be surprised if they find it! You can certainly keep your eye on it as it goes back to nature. You could even continue making more Art outdoors.

Another Video Clip . . a little longer, but this time you get to watch Andy work out and about in his homeland, Scotland. You also get to hear him "thinking like an artist"!!

Andy doesn't ALWAYS work outside. Sometimes the weather is too unfriendly. Sometimes he probably feels like just staying inside.

Here's one final Video Clip of Andy working indoors, or rather, bringing the Outdoors In!?!

IF you aren't able to go outside, how about THIS idea instead?! Grab a Blank Piece of Paper and a handy drawing material (pencil, pen, marker, crayon) and DRAW a Picture of Nature. Some place you love going outdoors, or maybe some place you wish you could go. Put some time and love into your drawing, filling with as much detail as you can think of. Again, when finished, feel free to send a digital picture to Mr. Reese (he'd LOVE to see your handiwork!!)

Until next time . . STAY CREATIVE!!!
