Carl Fost was born in 1891, to John and Mary Fost. He grew up in Benson, MN with his 9 siblings. He grew up working behind a horse and plow. He came to Willard and helped his brother Albert quite often. He helped Albert with planting trees. In 1911 he came to Fallon County and bought land from the Northern Pacific Railroad at the age of 20. His land was located 3 miles east of Willard. He started farming on his land and eventually built a house. He left and joined the Army, when he was visiting his brother. He was gone in service for 1 year, 1 month and 1 day overseas.
When he came back to help Albert, Louise was visiting her sister Ella. Louise Roget was born in 1902 to Jacob and Elizabeth Roget. She grew up on a farm with her 8 siblings. Her siblings all came to Montana to live. And indeed when she came she met Carl. Louise and Carl were joined in marriage in 1926. For their honeymoon they went to San Francisco. They eventually had 3 children, Rodney, James and Delphine. The children weren’t born in Baker. They lived in Oregon and Washington from 1931 to 1936. Unfortunately, cancer took Louise at the age of 39 from Carl and the kids. Carl and the kids moved to San Francisco while he worked in the construction area from 1944-45. In 1945 he packed the kids up again and moved back to Baker. He worked in construction in Baker until he later retired. He continued to farm until 1949. He later died at the age of 79 from a heart attack.
I am writing this as Carl Fost’s great great granddaughter. My great grandmother is Delphine (Fost) Hoenke. My grandmother is Janice (Hoenke) Moser, and I am Maria Moser. Our family has been in Fallon County since the beginning and all still live in Fallon County. Carl and Louise Fost are buried in the Bonneville Cemetery North of town. With James buried between them. Delphine is living in the Parkview Complex.
