Bulgarian railroad workers employed by the Milwaukee Railroad named the town of Plevna. Plevna in Russian translates into "city of churches." The town opened its post office in 1909, and homesteaders trickled into the area. Many of these immigrants were descendants of the German farmers invited by Catherine the Great, Empress of all the Russias, to settle the Russian steppes. Plevna grew up as a cluster of churches, bars, and mercantile operations serving the growing dryland farming community. Elevation: 2,809 ft. Location: Fallon County
