Emil and Bertha Veroye
Emil Veroye was born in Belgium and immigrated to the United States when he was 12. He lived with his aunt, who lived 11 miles north of Baker, but he learned very little English.Emil started the dray line Baker during 1922 until he was too ill to continue working. Emil always had ads in the newspaper for his dray line. Emil served in World War 1. Emil was in trouble with the law a lot of the time. He got his car confiscated and got put in jail with a bond of $500.
Bertha Ellen Brewer was born in Nebraska on May 31, 1890 and was the eldest of her 9 siblings. Bertha and her sister Sarah traveled by wagon to Marmarth, North Dakota. Sarah married Leonard Peterson and they had a son, Lavern J. Peterson.
Emil and Bertha got married in February 24, 1921. A lot of people thought that marriage was a punishment for Emil’s bachelor ways when he was younger. They had one kid together, Albert who was also called Sonny. When Sarah passed Bertha adopted her sister’s son, when he was six weeks old. After Emil died in 1942, Bertha continued to live in Baker. Lavern Veroye got married to Dolores Hudson and they had 5 kids together. Their kids are Mary Ellen, LaRita, Scott and Casey. This property is where the Scott Veroye family lives today.
I am writing, Alex Williams, as Emil and Bertha Veroye’s great-great granddaughter. Lavern and Dolores are my great grandparents and their daughter Mary Ellen Bagley is my grandmother.
