Fertile Prairie is a an area located approximately 7.5 miles East of Baker. In the late summer of 1917 the Fertile Prairie school was constructed across the road from the Fertile Prairie Community Hall. The area of Fertile Prairie was once nicknamed "Starvation Flats". The community surrounding Fertile Prairie had many social gatherings at the hall including birthday parties, dances and feeds. There were many clubs in the area including the Fertile Prairie Farm Association and the Womens SLC (Social Literary Club). They strove to keep up on current issues and things of interest to women in general: there was the U.M.B. Club (Unmarried Brothers). There were the Jolly Neighbors, a Birthday Club and Whist Club, and a Teenager Club.
