The Milwaukee Railroad established Ismay in 1907 at the point where the old stage road from Fort Lincoln to Fort Keogh crossed O'Fallon Creek. The town's name derives from either Isabelle and Mary Peck, daughters of railroad official George Peck or from Isabel and May Earling, daughters of another railroad official. In 1993, the town of Ismay agreed to change its' name to Joe to honor San Francisco 49'er quarterback Joe Montana. The famed quarterback never showed for the town's parade and rodeo. Thus the town of Joe went back to the town of Ismay. The Ismay Jail is listed in the National Register.
*Note Ismay and Baker were both included in Custer County until 1913 when the counties "busted" and Fallon County was formed.
