Gracie Combs is a senior at Badin who is thinking ahead when it comes to her future. She intends to go into the medical field as a career.
“I love helping people feel better and making their day,” Combs said.
Her career path stemmed from a young age. Combs spent her childhood in and out of doctors offices growing up and that pushed her decision to go into a medical based job.
“I have 3 other siblings so we had visits often. I had a bond with my doctor and with the nurses I met there,” Combs said.
There are many jobs within the medical field, many students change what exact job they want to do. Combs is not unknown to these changes.
“At first I wanted to be a physical therapist after watching my little brother receive it as a baby to help make his neck muscles stronger. I also watched as another helped a young girl walk after a leg surgery.” Combs said, “However once I entered highschool that changed as I learned more about the different fields and jobs I could do in medicine.”
Combs also mentions how her freshman technology class influenced her decision to change her career.
“I forget who, but someone in my class came up with this awesome presentation and was talking about being a doctor for adults. So I decided to change my path, I was going to be a doctor.”
Combs is now stuck between two different medical fields. Pediatrics, which is a branch of medicine that helps treat children with their diseases. And obstetrics (OB), a branch of medicine and surgery which helps women during childbirth and caring for them during childbirth.
“Peds seemed like the best option with me because I loved kids and I got along with them easier,” she said. “As I entered junior year I fell in love with anatomy and physiology and it was something I was really good at. This made me question and seek out once again if I wanted to be just a pediatrician or maybe an OB.”
However, even with all of the research Combs has done, she still isn’t sure what exactly she wants to go into yet.
“As of now I am still thinking about what I should pick as I do more research on each. Whichever one I decide on, I know I'll be happy with it.”
