Sophia Williams and her rich family history
By: Ian Sabourin
Sophia Williams is more than just your average Badin student. She has a rich family history and embraces every bit of it as someone who loves her family and being around them.
While most families do not have an important history this can't be said for Sophia. Her great grandmother, Berline Williams, was actually one of the parents of the two people to attempt to join an all white school in 1943 and was kicked out.
“I never knew my great grandmother but she is still an inspiration to me due to what she did to stand up for her son” when she sued the board of education in New Jersey, Williams said.
Sophia’s great grandmother ended up taking the case to the New Jersey Supreme Court and winning. The court ruled it was unlawful to exclude kids from a public school no matter their race.
“It is really cool that my family has this history and is one of the many reasons I am so close with my family,” Williams said.
Sophia is more than just a family centered person as she is a great friend that everyone can always count on when they need her.
According to sophomore Becca Moore, “She is very positive and considerate, she always has something good to say which always brightens my day and makes me smile.”
