The possibility of a new athletic complex is very exciting for the students and faculty of Badin High.
“It gives our kids a place to call home,” Geoff Melzer, athletic director, said.
Expanding to the west, Badin has acquired property on New London Rd. and Jerdan Ave.
“The zoning [approval] has to happen before we can do anything,” Pendergest says.
The athletic complex plans to include parking and a full stadium for 2600 people. The field, named after football coach Terry Malone, will include a football and soccer field and an eight lane track. Next to the stadium will be a full-sized practice field and a new maintenance building.
Funds from donors and alumni will be used to build the athletic complex.
“There is definitely support among our alumni,” Pendergest said. “We are meeting with a smaller number of people to gauge the true interest in this.”
Sophomore Anthony Jackman, soccer and track athlete, said, “I think the sports complex was a great decision by the school and I think it has been a long time coming, but I’m glad we can finally have it.”
“We all think that if this is able to come to a reality, this would be a great addition to our campus,” Pendergest said.
