Badin hosts a blood drive every year for students and staff to get the chance to donate. One blood donation can save up to three lives. Hospitals are in a need for blood as it is used for many procedures and in emergency cases. Having a large supply of blood can do wonders for a hospital.
The drive will be held on Friday, March 25. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Breetz as she is the director of the event and will be able to answer any questions you have. In an interview with her she had answered a few questions that were most asked.
Q: What should I bring to the blood drive?
A: Your driver's license, permission slip (if you are 16 years old) and birth certificate if you do not yet have a driver's license. If you forget any of these your Facts ID will be printed off.
Q: What are the qualifications I will need to donate blood?
A: You must weigh around 110lbs. Have a height of 5’4ft; height however does not matter as much as weight. There are also medical qualifications as well, it's best to ask a doctor if any of your medical history will affect your ability to donate. You also must be 16 years old.
Q: What should I do to prepare for donating blood?
A: Make sure to have all items you need to bring with you listed above. Stay hydrated, so make sure to start hydrating a bit more two weeks before donating. This will help with thickening your veins. Eat a protein filled dinner and breakfast, this is very important so you have a successful donation. Make sure to not schedule yourself for work and avoid lifting or practice that day.
Q: How can I avoid passing out?
A: Make sure you eat and drink the day before and day of the event. Avoid having a very activity filled day after donating. You will also be monitored closely, provided with drinks and snacks after you donate. If you do feel like you may pass out, tell one of the monitors or someone close to you and sit down to avoid injury.
Q: Why am I unable to donate blood?
A: If you are unable to donate blood you might be able to donate plasma at 18. You can also see if you are eligible to help work a blood drive near you. You can promote blood drives as well. If it is a medical reason you may want to consult with a doctor to see if medicine may help or some other treatment.
Q: What do I get out of donating blood?
A: Well you will be saving three lives with your donation. However you will also earn a red cord for your graduation at Badin. To get this cord you must donate three times before graduation.
If you have any more question about the drive and what will happen during please contact Mrs. Breetz.
