Initial Questions to Consider & Summary of Related Process
Is this the student's first- time enrollment in a U.S. school?
Parent completes HLS during registration process. Updated HLS is embedded on the online and paper-based enrollment form.
ESOL teacher generates the ESOL Program Status and Services Report in Infinite Campus to identify potential students who need to be screened.
Administer the appropriate ELP Screener based upon the GaDOE revised HLS protocol. Follow Decision Guide
Enter student documentation appropriately in the SLDS ELP Screener Tab.
Has the student been enrolled in a GA school before?
(In-state transfer)
Identify whether the student is an English Learner or not based on transferring school district’s records and/or the original HLS, original screener, or the latest ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 assessment.
Check the student's previous enrollment history in SLDS or district EL staff check GUIDE
Check the student's records in SLDS or GUIDE to see if there are any former ACCESS test results. Check prior ACCESS test results against state or prior school’s district entrance/exit criteria for that year.
Make every effort possible to obtain prior EL records within 30 days of enrollment.
Has the student been enrolled in a U.S. school in another state?
Identify whether the student is an English Learner or not based on transferring school district’s records.
Contact the previous school or district and ask for: The original HLS, Screening documents, and/or English Language Proficiency testing results.
If you are unable to contact the school, please contact district ESOL personnel for assistance.

WIDA Screener for Kindergarten
WIDA Online Screener
Students enrolling during Kindergarten registration – 1st semester Kindergarten.
Administer only the Listening and Speaking tests of the Screener.
Students enrolling in 2nd semester Kindergarten – 1st semester Grade 1.
Administer all four language domain tests.
Students enrolling in the 1st semester of the lowest grade in a grade-level cluster.
Administer a lower grade cluster WIDA Screener.
Example:
A 4th grader enrolling 1st semester 4th grade will be administered the Grades 2- 3 WIDA screener.
Students enrolling in the 2nd semester of the lowest grade in a grade-level cluster.
Administer the current grade cluster WIDA Screener.
Example:
A 4th grader enrolling 2nd semester 4th grade will be administered the Grades 4-5 WIDA Screener.
