Conscious Waste

My goal of "Conscious Waste" was to reduce the amount of municipal solid waste in my home over the period of a week. I did this to lower my family’s ecological footprint by reducing the amount of trash entering the landfill. Landfills are not great for the environment so we should try our best to limit the amount of land we designate to landfills. One way to do this is to limit the use of the current landfills. I gathered data by measuring the weight of the trash produced from one week's time. Then I talked to my family about how we could change that number. I decided to implement recycling of cans, #1, and #2 plastic. Not only did we recycle, we also sent all our food waste to the chickens, and we used some of the plastic containers to start our plants for the garden this summer. The first week our trash weighed in at 19.8 lbs and the week we used all our tactics it weighed in at 10.4 lbs. That is over 50% of waste that we recycled instead of sending it to the landfill.
