The Mat-Su borough currently does not have funded pick-up for recycling. While private companies like Denali Refuse do offer it, the service is far less used than residential trash pick-up. The goal of this project was to see the public’s opinion on a potentially free and borough funded recycling program. A brief poll was conducted via Facebook to members of the community, garnering around 400 responses from varying places throughout the borough including Meadow Lakes, Willow, Palmer, and all the way to Talkeetna. The difference between those who recycled and who did not was 50/50, yet an overwhelming majority (88.5%) would recycle materials would there be a program, and 52.9% of people who participated in the survey would strongly support such legislation. Looking at the project realistically, and after a brief glance of the Borough’s FY 2020 approved budget, further analysis into borough wasteful spending and expenditures could prove that this program could be at no extra cost to the public. This project was submitted to Dee McKee of District 3 in the Matanuska Assembly and awaits response.
