In 2022 a study done by the American Veterinary Medicine Association, AVMA, showed that approximately 44% of Americans own a dog. That same year more than 8 million metric tons of pet food was produced in America alone. The demand for so much pet food results in more than 64 million tons of carbon dioxide being dumped in our atmosphere each year along with an estimated 300 million pounds of plastic waste per year. These statistics are why I decided to advocate for feeding our dogs a higher-quality diet while also maintaining a healthy relationship with our planet. Through my project I was able to research and find five different dog food brands that I believe have the least amount of destruction to the environment. I made an informative brochure that I then handed out to animal related companies, such as PetZoo and Palmer Vet Clinic to get the word out. To reach an even bigger audience I posted a QR Code to my brochure around public places such as The Fern. I hope that my project makes people reflect upon what they are feeding their pets and opt for a more environmentally friendly option.
