At Richmond Park Academy students study a foreign language as we believe that languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Today, learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfillment. In the words of Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” Indeed, the ability to communicate in another language is a skill for life. Learning languages gives pupils opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They will recognize patterns and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. The development of communication skills, together with understanding of the structure of language, lays the foundations for future study of other languages and supports the development of literacy skills in a pupil’s own language. The MFL faculty believe that an intense and rigorous language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Our aim is to give pupils  the opportunity to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and to communicate in both speech and  writing.
