Course Overview

This is an elective AP course taken by juniors and seniors in preparation for the AP Biology Exam.  The course meets all the standards and requirements outlined by the AP Program. Through this course, students will understand that science is a process built on principles of reasoning and inquiry.  Students will experiment and synthesize ideas to build conclusions based on scientific evidence. Furthermore, students will collaborate with each other to test their conclusions and ultimately increase their knowledge of the subject at hand. An investigative approach will be emphasized, which stress the importance of scientific inquiry.

Course Outline

This course is structured around the four big ideas and the enduring understandings identified in the Curriculum Framework. [CR2]  The teacher will instruct and teach all information essential for the understanding of the Curriculum Framework. This course will center on an inquiry-based lab approach, utilizing the seven science practices.

The Four Big ideas are:

Big idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.

Big idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and to maintain dynamic homeostasis.

Big idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes.

Big idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.

The big ideas and enduring understandings will be posted in the room.  The learning objectives will be used to stimulate and drive class discussions. Throughout the course, correlations will be identified and made between the big ideas and enduring understandings.
