The Davis County Board of Education believes it has a responsibility to promote healthy living and to create a safe and healthy environment for all students, employees, and visitors to the district.

Smoking on school grounds is a violation of state law and is prohibited. “School grounds” include, but is not limited to: parking lots, athletic fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, and any other outdoor area under the control of a public educational facility, including inside any vehicle located on such school grounds. In addition, all public educational facilities, as well as public buildings, grounds and vehicles owned, leased, operated or otherwise used by or under the control of the district shall be free of all smoking and use of tobacco products.

To the extent not already addressed by this policy, smoking is prohibited in all enclosed areas within the district, which may include but is not limited to, work areas, private offices, conference and meeting rooms, classrooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, employee lounges, cafeterias, hallways, nurses office, restrooms, elevators, stairways and stairwells.

This policy extends to all school district personnel and visitors, and shall be in effect at all times. Employees shall not smoke or use tobacco products when supervising students, on or off school property.

Employees found to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to discipline which may include any of the following.

1. Written reprimand

2. Suspension without pay

3. Termination

The level of discipline shall be determined by the administration on a case-by-case basis.

Visitors or any other persons violating this policy shall be asked to refrain from smoking or using other tobacco products while on school property in accordance with state law and district policy. Persons failing to abide by this request shall be asked to leave the district premises immediately.
