(...) 映画の中の諸存在が、人物や事実や風景であると同時に、究極的には同一の光である、あるいは、究極的には同一の光に内在するという事 実が映画作家によって考え抜かれる時、映画的思考は、あらゆる存在がそれ自体であると同時に、究極的には同一の神=自然であると考え抜いたスピノザの「内在性」の哲学と、興味深い反響関係を営みはじめるように思われる。
(...) 光の内在性を徹底的に探求した映画作家たちが、同時にこのような生の根本的な事実を我々に示してきたのは、不思議なことではない かもしれない。なぜなら、我々の生そのものが、光によって周囲の事物や風景を認識し、光によって直接、間接に与えられたエネルギーを摂取する中で営まれて いるのであり、その意味で、映画的存在と我々自身の存在の間には、最初から並行関係が存在しているからだ。
(...) ドライヤーがフィルムに焼き付けた「光=イメージ」は、従って、俳優たちのアクションに焦点を当て、ストーリー上の意味の明確さ を強調する古典的な照明によるものとは根本的に異なったものである。それは、人間同士が繰り広げるドラマを含みつつも、それと同時に、人間を取り囲む事物 や自然の全体が与える光と関係しあい、それを眺める我々を、人間中心的視点の狭隘さを脱出した地点へと運んでいくのである。
(...) キアロスタミは、彼の風景写真集に収められたインタビューで「自然は、様々なスタイルと方法で描く、素晴らしい画家なんだ」と 述べ、好きな画家は誰かと尋ねられると再度、「私が一番好きな画家は自然だ」と答えているが、それに倣って言うなら、彼にとって自然こそが最高の映画作家 なのだ。そして、この自然という言葉を広い意味で理解しても、キアロスタミの考えには反すまい。《10話》が素人俳優を用い、彼らの、彼ら自身の日常性に 基づいた自然な演技を重視するのも、そうした俳優たちが自然の一部を構成するからである。そして究極的には、映画監督も――そして観客も――自然という唯 一の制作者の一部なのであり、その唯一の制作者の一部として、つねに制作者であり続けるのである。
(...) ほとんど無限に緩慢な時間の中で、黒い塊は犬となり、青い海は白くなり、空と、さらに陸と不可分になり、すべてが真っ白になっ て、その中に犬や波を吸い込んでゆく。この《5 five~小津安二郎に捧げる~》の第三エピソードほど、映画のイメージが「光=イメージ」であり、そして我々自身の存在が、自然=神の白色光の中にある ことを見事に示した映像は存在しないのではないだろうか。
(...) この映画[ビクトル・エリセ《マルメロの陽光》]の面白い点の一つは、エリセが、アントニオ・ロペスによる「マルメロの木に含 まれた宇宙全体」との対話が決して牧歌的な自然の中で営まれたものではないことを明白に示していることである。ロペスの内庭には近くを走る電車の騒音が響 きわたり、その周囲には都市郊外の団地のビルが広がり、そして夜は、たくさんの住居にテレビの光が燈る。ロペスが絵を描くときに好んで聞くクラシック音楽 のラジオ番組は、時折音楽を中断して国内や国外の時事ニュースを伝える。ロペスがそれでも一本のマルメロの木を描き続けるのは、そうした様々なもの(電 車、団地、テレビ、ニュース)がやはり「マルメロの木に含まれた宇宙全体」の一部をなしていると彼が考えるからであり、そして、そうしたロペスの姿をカメ ラで追うエリセも同じように考えるからである。なぜだろうか。それは、どんなに我々が我々自身の生活を人工的なもので覆ったとしても、我々が、マルメロの 木と同じように、白い光の中で――太陽の光だけでなく、テレビ画面の光も、そしてもちろん、映画を映し出す光も含めて――そこからエネルギーを受けて生活 を営んでいることに変わりないからである。
