(...) フィールドワーク初期の人類学者にとって、多くの事物は不確実な形でしか既知の「かたち」と結びつけられないものであり、時に 「かたちをもたない」イメージでもある。経験の蓄積の中で、人類学者は自らを取り囲むイメージをしだいにより安定した「言語・記号システム」(現地のそ れ、自言語等のそれおよび分析上のそれ)と関係付けてゆくが、しかしそこで対象が生き生きとした形で捉え続けられている限り、「かたちをもたない」イメー ジの次元は消えないだろう。
(...) 民族誌映像の制作においては、撮影者も被写体も、ある「動き」の中にあるのであり、民族誌映像とはそういった流動する現実の中 で、撮影者と被写体が相互に影響しあい、ある部分両者の意図が識別不能になりつつ、制作されるものなのである。(...) こうした相互影響の関係は今日しばしば「共同制作」と呼ばれるが、そこに主体間の意識的な協力関係以前の抜き差しならない関係が含まれていることは見落と せない。それはドゥルーズのいう、本来無関係な物同士の同時的な生成(devenir, becoming)とみることもできる。
(...) アザラシ狩りのショットのような全体志向的なショットをカット編集に組み入れつつ、映像の具体性の中で「全体」を表現しようとし たフラハティの手続きは、言葉の抽象能力を利用したマリノフスキーの手続きとは異質なものである。そして、フラハティがそこで表現した「全体」とは、マリ ノフスキーのそれのような客観主義的な分析の中で想定される「社会構造の明瞭で確実な輪郭」ではなく、むしろ撮影者と被撮影者が不可分になり、客観的現実 と主観的現実が不可分になるような瞬間に忽然と、「認識と同時に啓示でもある」ものとして現出してくる特別な「全体」であった。
(...) 人類学から見た「映画=トランス」の意味は何だろうか。(...) それは被写体の現実の直接的な「憑依」によって生まれるがゆえに、人類学者の思考が持ち込みがちな西欧/非西欧、伝統/近代といった区別を最初から越えた ものである。(...) ルーシュはこの強烈に伝統的でありながら同時に強烈に近代的でもある現実を、それをどう人類学的に言語化=カテゴリー化するか苦慮することなく、ただそれ によって「憑依」されつつそのままフィルムに焼き付けたのである。
(...) ガードナーの映画は、ある意味でルーシュのそれに劣らず「映画=トランス」であると言えるかもしれない。ただ彼の場合は、人間の身体をも含めた「物質的なもの」によって「憑依」されるのである。
