(...) 『悲しき熱帯』の終わりの方で彼[レヴィ=ストロース]は、民族学者の野望は「根源に遡ること」であると書く。一言で言えば、彼 の研究の根本的な動機は、西欧の近代社会が自らを確立した時期に決定的な影響を与えたアメリカ大陸の先住民のもとに自ら赴き、そこで「自然人」としての人 間のあり方について根源に遡って考えること、そして、そうした遡行の作業によって獲得した視点から自らの社会を捉えなおすこと――そして望むらくはそうし た知見に基づいて社会を変革すること――にあったと言えるだろう。
(...) レヴィ=ストロースの人類学は、最初から最後まで、研究対象を客体化してそのメカニズムを解析し、それを応用に役立てようとする 社会科学ではなくて、対象との関係の中で人間の根本的な存在条件を知性・感性の両方を手がかりに探求し、そこから人間社会を再構想しようとする、人類学= 政治哲学=倫理学であった。
(...) 『悲しき熱帯』の「悲しさ」とは、確かに直接的には西欧文明の拡大のもとで破壊されつつある社会が引き起こす「悲しさ」ではある けれど、その彼方にはどこか、人間存在の有限性そのものに由来するような、いわば存在論的な「悲しさ」――ベンヤミン的にいえば「楽園の言語」が失われた 「悲しさ」――が鳴り響いているのだ。
(...) 我々の内に潜んでいる「自然」という主体――レヴィ=ストロース自身、先の引用にもあるように、「身体自体のなかにすでにかすか に現われているより深い真実」について語っていた――が、我々の意識的な自己の下部で、いかにして「自然」自身を表現しているかを、音楽の作曲にも似たプ ロセスを通じて結晶化させ、それによって、我々自身の社会に向けてひそかに「目覚まし時計」を設計すること、それがおそらくレヴィ=ストロースの人類学の 最終的な企てなのである。
(...) 神話素の旋律の響き合いを聴き取ることを重視するあまり、そして、神話を我々の身体の奥底で聴き取る「自然」的主体を重視するあ まり、彼[レヴィ=ストロース]は神話素の連鎖が人々に与える具体的イメージ、そしてそうした具体的イメージを感じ取る実在的な主体を、消去してしまって はいないだろうか。「自然」的主体への視点移動の意義を十全に認めた上で、しかし他方で、有限な存在としての我々の一人一人が具体的にしか存在しえないこ と、「自然」的主体は、結局のところ(少なくとも我々自身にとって)そうした有限で具体的な存在を通じてのみ意味を持つことは、重要な人間的事実ではない だろうか 。
(...) レヴィ=ストロースのこの[『神話論理Ⅰ』の序曲における]音楽論は今日、アマチュアの音楽愛好家によるいくぶん狭量な現代音楽 批判と見なされることが少なくない。しかし、彼の議論を裏側から読み返すなら、二十世紀の西欧社会において、楽音という極めて抽象的な素材を用いて神話的 思考を維持してきた近代西洋音楽さえもが、もはや成立不可能になってきたということ、そして、セリー音楽やミュージック・コンクレート―そしてそれ以降の 様々な音楽上の革新―はそうした近代西洋音楽の「廃墟」から出発するものであること、を鋭く指摘するものとみることもできる。
(...) 背後にコードが共有されていることがもはや自明ではない言葉や音や事物や映像の表層から、そこにありえたコードの痕跡ないしあり うるコードの可能性を注意深く読みとりながら――時にデュシャン風の「レディメード」の深読みでも行いつつ――それらを織り合わせ、いうなれば一種の「具 体の音楽」を作り出すことによって、一瞬の間、「自然」の真理を表出させること。そうした作業を我々は今日、意識の有無、成功の成否に関わらず、我々の生 そのものの意味を確保するために、密かに行うことを余儀なくされているのではないだろうか。
