(...) 芸術作品は現実のヴィジョンそのものではなく、それを、芸術家自身をとりまく現実の中で受け止めつつ、あるまとまりをもった全体として投げ返すものである。バルトークたちにとっての課題は、「民衆芸術に現れるオリジナルな感情を把握し、それを現代生活の複雑さに対応する形で再創造すること」であり、民衆芸術をコピーするのではなく、より高いコンセントレーション、単純さと強度ある表現に向かうことであった。バルトークは、素材とする民謡をある完成したオブジェクトとして利用するのではなく、まずその民謡の持つ内的な調性的可能性を把握した上で、それを彼独自な形で発展させていったのである。
(...) 一つの重要な手続きは、ドライヤーが「視覚的純化」(visual purification)と呼んでいたものに見ることができるだろう。彼は、最初に完全に生の現実そのものであるかのようなセッティングを作り、その後でそこから、作品にとって本質的でない要素をすべて取り除いてゆく。結果として、ほとんど抽象的であるほど簡素で単純でありながら、そこにあるもののすべてにおいて完全な感じを与える映像が生まれることになる。ドライヤーは、余計な要素を取り除かなければ、「セッティングの現実はそれ自体が関心を引いてしまい、観客はストーリーから注意をそらされてしまう」とも述べているが、こうした「視覚的純化」によって、映像は確かに、具象的な次元と抽象的な次元の双方において、「フェノメナ」を透徹した形で表現してゆくものとなってゆくだろう。
(...) 例えば野生動物や家畜のような、容易にコントロールのきかない要素の導入も、映像の非中心化に役立つだろう。『田園詩』(Pastorali, 1975)の家畜から、『素敵な歌と船は行く!』(Adieu, plancher des vaches!, 1999) における鳥や『月曜日に乾杯!』(Lundi matin, 2002)の爬虫類など、イオセリアーニは好んで動物を画面に導入する。(...) 動物の存在は単に映像を非中心化するだけでなく、俳優たちの演技や撮影のプロセスそのものを、ドラマトゥルギーの過度に論理的な宇宙から解放するのだ。
(...) ニーチェは、19世紀ヨーロッパにおける「ますます深化する人間の経済的搾取」と「利益と生産にますます覆われたメカニズム」の生活への浸透を背景に、そうしたメカニズムに抵抗してより良い存在様式を作り出す者は、「平均化された人間たちへの距離の感情(Distanz-Gefuhl)を必要とする」と述べた)。ところで、ニーチェの思考の精妙な点は、この「距離」とは、「平均化された人間たち」の存在様式の否定ではなく、そうした存在様式を前提とした上で、そこから「距離を保つ」ことが必要だと考える点である。「なぜなら、この[そうしたメカニズムの中に捕われた人間たちという]土台の上に、より優れた存在の形を発明し、構築することができるからである」。その意味で、イオセリアーニの[『素敵な歌に船は行く』の原題『牛どもの床よ、さらば』における]「牛どもの床」とは、所有権のシステム(「利益と生産にますます覆われたメカニズム」)に囚われて所有を見失った現代の我々の社会そのものであり、「牛どもの床よ、さらば!」とは、そうした我々、平均化された人間たちが形成する土台に向かっての「距離の感情」――あるいは「距離のパトス」――の表現にほからないと言えるだろう。我々は「牛どもの床」の上に住んでいるのであり、そこからの出口はない、他の世界は存在しない。しかし、その「牛どもの床」を「距離のパトス」をもって眺めることが、よりよい存在様式を創造する可能性を生み出すのだ。それはまた、この論考での言葉でいえば、所有権のシステムの中で見失ってしまった世界を、再び所有することでもあるはずである。
