(...) [レヴィ=ストロースは]その著作の中で、一貫して、世界を不連続性ないし離散性の相のもとで捉えることの正当性を強く主張した(そこから彼の構造主義が くる)。しかし、彼の著作の細部を注意深く読むとき、そうした「強い」レヴィ=ストロースの下に、自らが排除するはずの連続性を敏感に感じ取り、時にそれ に魅惑すらされる、もう一人のレヴィ=ストロースが現れてくる。不連続性と連続性の二つの主題は、あたかもソナタ形式の音楽におけるように複雑に絡み合い つつ、時に未解決の不協和音を残しながら彼の諸著作の中を走り抜けていく(...)
(...) 『純粋理性批判』においてカントは、概念的な判断様式から一連の範疇(カテゴリー)を引き出したが、レヴィ=ストロースは、そう した概念化を行う意識よりも下にある思考の次元、言いかえるなら、自然そのものが現象する中で、感覚的かつ知的な対象としてのイメージがコード化されて認 識される、イメージ的思考の図式を考察の対象としたのである。(...) 上で「神話理性批判」と言ったのは単なる語呂合わせではない。カント的理性と同様に、神話理性もまた仮象を生み出すのであり、だから神話理性の批判が必要 なのだ――『野生の思考』の一つの核心はそこにある。(...) メトニミー的なイメージの連鎖として、世界の連続性および世界との連続性を回復するかの ように用いられるとき、神話理性は我々を誤謬の中に誘い込む。
(...) [『神話論理』における]神話分析を通した人間の基層的な経験の構造の検討において、最も重要なテーマの一つとして現れるのが、 まさに連続性と不連続性の問題である。実際、人間が世界を不連続なイメージの体系によって把握しようとしても、自然はそうした離散的なコード化を容易に許 さない現象(星雲や虹、暗闇、病気、毒…)によってそれに抵抗するし、また人間がそうした自然の中を生きることは、時間の中での不断の変化をも、抜き差し ならない形で内包している。だから連続性とは、神話的思考がたえず衝突する固い岩盤のようなものなのだ。
(...) 『神話論理』の第三巻『食卓技法の起源』の、文字通り「神話から小説へ」と題された部で、小説とは、歴史の中で神話がその構造を 喪失する際に生まれた断片を縒り合せつつ語られる、「不幸な」文学ジャンルであるとしつつ、次のように「小説家」を特徴づける。「小説家は、歴史の熱気が 氷解を引き起こして氷原からひきはがした浮遊する氷塊のあいだを漂いながら漕ぎ進むことになる。彼は散在する素材を拾い集めて、それがとる姿に従って再利 用するのだ。(...)」 (...) [しかし]ここで翻って考えるなら、「散在する素材を拾い集めて、それがとる姿に従って再利用する」ことを、人一 倍研ぎ澄まされた感性によって実践してきたのは、レヴィ=ストロース自身だったとも思われる。
(...) 『神話論理』に限らず、彼のどんな著作を読んでも、彼以前および彼以後の誰も行わなかったような独創的な形で人間の不連続的なイ メージ的思考を叙述するレヴィ=ストロースの傍らに、事物の連続的イメージの中から不連続的な構造が析出する一瞬を拾い上げるもう一人のレヴィ=ストロー スが見え隠れしている。そして幸いなことに前者は後者の足跡を消し去らず、著作の端々に我々にとっての手掛かりを残してくれている。我々は、そういった両 者の間の豊かな、音楽的な往復運動を想像する中で(この小論自体がその一つの試みであるが)、アクチュアルな、新しい「イメージの人類学」を構築すること ができるだろう。
