May 4 - here we go

Post date: May 4, 2013 4:06:07 PM

I wait all year for these next few weeks in May, when the woodlands come to life with color.

This week we had two days in the 80's that pushed blooms to open a bit faster. Otherwise the temps have been cool, which prolongs the bloom time.

A slow start to the season is appreciated, so that we can savor each day.

Today just starting to open are:

Dutchman's breeches, White trout lily. Virginia bluebells, Celandine poppy, Rue-anemone, and Sharp-Lobed Hepatica. The Bloodroot are almost done, and scattered around like last year.

There are several new groupings of Solomon's seal up and down the hills, which might indicate another good year for germination.

Ground bees have all come out from their holes in the gravel areas; and now I am seeing many ant hills popping up near by; possible due to all the rain we have had.

The Chipmunk Diary photo series is not going as well as planned using a cell phone placed on the ground. I will try taking photos with digital SLR camera.

Looking for compositions from an on-the-ground point of view has been fun, and I find myself wishing I was much smaller to better appreciate the context.
