June 15 - Heron attack

RIP Mr and Mrs Sparkles!
My 2 favorite koi were taken by a great blue heron this week.
We installed netting about 6 inches above the pond surface, and it seems to be working- the remaining 4 fish are calm and enjoying life under the protection. The frogs are relieved also- I think we are missing at least 2 frogs...
Planning a trip to Keystone Hatcheries for a couple new fish, hopefully they have stocked some with iridescent scales ala Mr/Mrs Sparkles.
The lack of rain, has not impacted the prairie, penstemmon, pale purple coneflower, butterfly weed, blackeyed Susan and coreopis are all in bloom.
On a walk in the neighborhood, we came upon a wild turkey, only two feet off the road.
She was low to the ground, nestled over her 7-8 poults- the babies were newborns, so tiny!
They all ran for cover into nearby sumac, the mother made what I think is described as a putting sound.
