The woods are close to peak bloom this week; even though my counter says we are 19 days past...

We have had 5 straight days of cold and rain, finally the sun is shining; it is 60 degrees. It snowed briefly yesterday morning.

Blue birds have JUST arrived to nest; they are challenging the chickadees out of the blue bird boxes.

I came upon a beautiful luna moth which lay their eggs on the bottom of Black Walnut leaves- the first I have ever seen in this woods.

Celandine poppies are populating further and further into neighboring woods.

Phlox are spreading down the hill into the ravine.

Most of the woodland plants are inter-planting, growing into a tapestry of colors and textures--

soon the entire hill will be in bloom in the spring; we have reached critical mass.

This year, we decided increase the shrub population and support nesting birds.

We planted quite a few last week:

    • spicebush
    • nanny berry
    • pagoda dogwood
    • smooth hydrangea
    • american filbert
    • witch hazel
    • ninebark
