Gambling!

They boast 1,100 gambling machines in 120,000 Square Feet of casino space.

With over 100 Table & Poker Games chances are you won’t find many of your weirder games. But they do have the basics. And Rio is home to the World Famous World Series of Poker.

We went to Rio once 10 years ago. Being off strip we really didn’t have much interest. Then one trip I needed a room for the weekend. And since Rio showed up comped over the 4th of July weekend we took them up on it.

Was I ever glad I did! The casino was OK. I was not thrilled when we walked in the place. Then we saw the newer Masquerade Casino and I was shocked. It was large, themed and had a ring of great shops around it. I was in love! Its pretty easy to get to and from the strip as well. They run free shuttles to Harrahs & Ballys most hours of the day. I will say, it seems like the Rio is a HUGE Hooker haven. So if you are looking for that sort of thing, you can find one pretty easy here.

Funny Story

We wake up and find the elevators at the Rio are down. I guess it happens a lot since the staff knew exactly what to do. We found a few other stranded guests and formed a posse. We found a Maid, Pho, who was very nice. She would not let anyone use the stairs since it would trip the alarm and lead directly outside. Not that I would climb down 30 flights anyway. Down through the employee elevator and through a storage corridor and we were on the casino floor. Alright so maybe that’s one of my shittier stories, not much happened here.

What’s to eat?

Not a whole lot. I guess they really want to get you into their buffets. Both are Top Notch! They do have a Whopper Bar. Not a whole Burger King mind you, just a Whopper Bar with all kinds of toppers you won’t find at your local BK.

As Vegas eateries change almost hourly you might want to double check if these places are still in operation. This blog is very lazy with updates...

The Room Basics

The rooms are huge. Almost too big for the furniture they put in here. It basically looks like a 1970’s porno set. Mirrors on the wall that peep into the bathroom. Shiney Gold fixtures everywhere and a huge fabric headboard. But the bed was comfy enough. It had a nice couch and one of those old 500 pound rare tube TV’s my grandpa used to tell me about. If you can swing a view, you get the back side of the strip. But the windows are floor to ceiling so it’s worth it. The bath and shitter are in their own little room, so your guest can do their hair while you take care of business. Each room comes with a mini fridge that you can actually use! Score!

What you need to know.

Rio might be a pain to get to, but they lack of Resort Fees means you can drop that $20.00 on a cab and get to anywhere on the strip each day. They will try to up-charge you on a view. I think it was $10.00. But a smile might get the job done. It worked for me. I liked everything about the Rio, except the fact that we were constantly getting pizza menus from local places stuffed under our room door every day.

In closing:

Big casino, the Masquerade in the sky show is pretty fun. They also have cocktail waitress hop up on platforms and sing or dance randomly. They even have a stage show right in the casino with dancers and singers. It might look like they are trying too hard, but at least they are trying!

What else you need to know?

They do have a Spa & a great pool. But while we were there it seemed like anyone off the street could just walk in. No one asked us for a room card. Voo Doo is also outstanding. I don’t visit any clubs in Vegas but it’s a great place to eat and just look out at the strip. From Rio you can walk over to the Gold Coast and from there you can walk to the Palms but that’s about it.

Major attractions.

As Vegas shows change almost hourly you might want to double check if these are still in operation. This blog is very lazy with updates...

Chippendales Theater. Nudey Men Show. They tell me its fun.

The Rat Pack is Back! A tribute to the Rat Pack, they might not look like them, well maybe a little but they sure do sound like them! They also have an Elvis show and a bunch of pthers out here.

Penn & Teller. This is their big show. They even splashed these guys on the side of the building. If you don’t know the antics of Penn & Teller, chances are you wont find they show very funny. After all the magic is a little lame. But if you know who they are, and they make you laugh like they make me laugh you will love it! They are always running specials on this show for buy one get one free so check around. The Rio’s Facebook page had a coupon on it the last time I checked.

What did a hundo get us?

We played through five $20.00 bills on various machines. If we bet $1.00 a spin, we give em 20 spins and cash out. $2.00 per spin is 10 spins. If you can’t wrap your brain around this math, please do not gamble. I am sure this test of the slots is insanely scientific. But your actual millage may vary.

1st machine: Wheel of Fortune. $2.00 Max Bet. Cashed out with $35.00. Major hit Wheel for $30.00

2nd machine: U-Spin. $0.80 Bet. Cashed out with $11.20. Major hit a few small ones

3rd machine: Top Dollar. $2.00 Max Bet. Cashed out with $2.00 Major hit a slap in my face!

4th machine: Instant Spin. $5.00 Max Bet. Cashed out with $105.00. Major hit Instant Spin for $100.00

5th machine Instant Spin. $5.00 Max Bet. Cashed out with $0.00. Major hit none. We got ballsey with it after cleaning her out for a hundo earlier.

Total results. Turning $100.00 into $146.20 in 30 minutes seemed pretty easy. All of the CET joints in town have a rep of paying back shit. But since the Rio is off strip, and they have to compete with other off strip properties they have to pay back better.
