The National Hope Association, in partnership with the City of Columbia and the COMO Supplier Diversity Program, is piloting a donated car program targeted at the City’s three Strategic Plan Neighborhoods. The focus of the program is to provide reliable transportation to low-income individuals and families who cannot afford transportation but are in need of support to seek and retain employment, improve their ability to maintain self-sufficiency and to perform daily tasks where transportation is needed such as getting children to daycare, attending school events, doctor appointments and getting involved in community activities.

The targeted populations for the donated Cars 4 Columbia are:

  • Low-income individuals and families

  • Single-parent families

  • Veterans

  • Non-violent ex-offenders

  • Survivors of domestic violence

  • People transitioning from welfare to work

  • People transitioning from homelessness

  • Transportation-challenged students

Recipients have to meet eligibility requirements and will be given training on basic auto maintenance, safe driving, correct use of seat belts and child safety restraints and future support for vehicle repairs.

Eligibility: Referrals from social service agencies required.

Transportation Services

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, or NEMT, can be used when you do not have a way to get to your healthcare appointment without charge. We may use public transportation or bus tokens, vans, taxi, or even an ambulance, if necessary to get you to your healthcare appointment. Home State will give you a ride that meets your needs. You do not get to choose what kind of car or van or the company that will give you the ride. You may be able to get help with gas costs if you have a friend or a neighbor who can take you. This must be approved before your appointment.

Who can get NEMT services? You must be on MO HealthNet or MO HealthNet Managed Care on the day of your appointment. People in a MO HealthNet Managed Care Health Plan get their NEMT services from the health plan. Some people on MO HealthNet or MO HealthNet Managed Care do not get NEMT services as part of their benefits. The NEMT program will let you know if your benefits do not cover NEMT.

Children who are under age 17 must have an adult ride with them.

We will only pay for one child and one parent/guardian and/or an attendant if your child is under age 21 and needs to be away from home overnight or needs someone to be with him/her. We will not pay for other children or adults.

Call 1-866-269-5927. You must call at least 5 calendar days before the day of the appointment or you may not get NEMT. You may call this number Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. for regular scheduled appointments.
