This week's skill assessment is for the kicking. This skill will start with kicking a stationary ball for the Kindergarten and First Grade students, evolve into kicking a ball that is moving (like being pitched to you in a kickball game) for 2nd and 3rd grade, and then lead to demonstrating skills with punting and kicking at the 4th and 5th grade level. SEE VIDEOS BELOW FOR FURTHER EXPLANATION.
Every Spring we teach our older students (4th and 5th Grade) about track and field events and in a typical year we would hold a district track meet for all of the elementary schools to compete in various running and field events. Some of the videos posted this week will teach you how to do some of those events as well. My students in those grades also went for a longer distance run / walk of 1 mile. I encourage you to try some of these events and modify them as you need to with the equipment that you have at home for the softball throw.
My younger students worked on some kicking and throwing games this week including pin down and pin knock over (featured below) There are many ways to play this game and I will include one of those versions below. In the video it is a throwing game, but can easily be changed into a soccer style game by having students kick the ball to try and knock down someone else's pin or roll it like in bowling. If you don't have pins at home, you could use water bottles and depending on what type of ball you have, you could use a tennis ball and roll it only, soccer balls and try to kick them back and forth across your driveway, or rolled up socks if your parents are okay with it and they you could safely throw them across the driveway at one another. Make it into a family activity for even more fun!
