Have you ever seen litter on the side of the road? This litter causes pollution to have an impact on marine life. When this trash gets into the ocean it's called marine pollution. Marine pollution effects animals all over the world. This is the problem that needs to be fixed.
Littering is a big cause of marine litter. Anything can be littered like cups, food, papers, or plastic bags. Most of this stuff can be brought to the ocean by wind currents or people can through their trash on the beach and it can be kicked or blowen into the ocean, and float out to deeper spots in the ocean. This can cause litter to be in the ocean. The litter that’s in the ocean can harm economic growth. Litter takes many impacts on people or animals.
Sewage and waste is often disposed of in the ocean and causes marine life problems. The amount of chemicals in sewage stored in portable toilets and holding tanks contain chemicals such as chlorine, ammonium, and zinc are toxic to marine life. Under some conditions sewage empties into the ocean from recreational craft may disturb marine life. According to (Dosomething.org) “ 100,000 sea mammals die each year because of pollution”.
Litter has an impact on marine/ ocean life. Sea turtles usually can mistake a plastic bag for their prey and eat it. The bag can get caught inside their digestive system. This could choke them, or can block their stomachs and die. Over 1 million marine animals die each year of swallowing plastic. Some organisations found 329 pieces of garbage in a sea turtle's digestive system. Also if an animal sees and mistakes glass for their food they could cut themselves chewing or swallowing the glass. This can happen to any marine animals. “ Scientist predict that by the year of 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish” (Newsela.com).
This is a graph of how many sea turtles get stuck in rappers each month as of 2010.
There are lots of ways you can fix this problem. It's hard to fix the marine pollution or litter that’s in the ocean on your own, so a couple ways to help is to not litter in the first place. If you stop littering you can make the earth more clean along with the ocean. If there is trash in the ocean people don't want to swim, but if there isn't trash in the ocean people will want to swim and visit more. People know that it's bad for the environment but they keep littering instead of taking care of it. You can support a team that cleans up the marine garbage. If there is trash along the beach find some friends that's willing to help you clean up.
Another way you can fix the problem of marine/ land litter or pollution is to use reusable items like cups. If you have morning coffee instead of using a plastic cup have a reusable one. You can also bring a reusable water bottle to school and not have the plastic water bottles. You won't be tempted to throw it on the side of the road or on the street. This will help maintain the trash on the side of the road. You can also fix this problem with reusable bags. 380 billion plastic bags end up in the ocean each year, where some marine animals mistake it for their prey and eat it. Instead of using the plastic bags for groceries, use the reusable bags.
