According to water.org, 844 million people around the world don’t have safe water. There are 5 countries (Yeman, Libya, Jordan, The Western Sahara, and Djibouti) in the world that have a very low amount of water. In this writing you will learn what the water crisis is, about a teen activist named Ryan Hreljac, and how we can help these people in need of safe water.
If you are wondering what the water crisis is, it’s something that is happening in the world where people don't have clean water or barely any water at all. They’re drinking brown, mucky, dirty, bacteria- filled water everyday to survive. There is a water crisis because there are so many people in the world but not enough water for the amount of people. The 5 countries that are most affected have a lot of people so they are running out of water.
Children all around the world have to walk miles which takes hours to get somewhere for water. They have to go to a lake, stream, pond, or something else. All they end up getting at these places is dirty mucky water that they have to drink. This water is not good for humans but it’s the worst for children. It makes the kids so sick that they can pass away. In total, all the countries in at least a small water crisis adds up to 43 countries. According to water.org, every 21 seconds a child in the world dies because of the water they are drinking
Ryan Hreljac is a teen activist who raised money and had wells drilled for people around the world. He was in 1st grade when his teacher, Mrs. Prest, was teaching the class about the water crisis that was happening in the world. Ryan thought about how kids around the world had to walk hours for water when all he had to do has walk down his hallway.
“All I had to do was take 10 steps from my classroom to get to the drinking fountain and I had clean water” says Ryan Hreljac. Then he came up with an idea, he was going to go home and do lots of extra chores for him to earn $70. He thought $70 would build a well but it turns out he had to get about $2,000 to build a well. He started doing extra chores for months. He was doing chores and he even started a fundraiser. Eventually earned the $2,000 he needed. Then he sent the money to WaterCan (a company raising money for fresh water around the world). Then they drilled a well next to Angolo Primary School with the money Ryan raised.
Ryan soon started to make lots of money by doing fundraisers which allowed more wells to be drilled. He traveled 18 months to watch his crew drill the wells. He went to Uganda, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania to watch many wells be drilled in each country. He made enough money to have 319 wells built which is over 1 million dollars. All those wells that got drilled with the money he raised saved the lives of over 750,900 people. Ryan saved a lot of peoples lives with the wells he drilled.
Now Ryan is 27 years old and he is continuing his dream of bringing the world clean water.
This is Ryan Hreljac
You might be wondering how to help this water crisis. There are many ways to help this situation such as donating money to a fundraiser or company that is raising money to build more wells in the world, you could start your own fundraiser like Ryan did, or you can just raise awareness.
Something very important that you could do is just use you water wisely. Just because you have all the clean water you need doesn’t mean you should waste it. Some people don’t even have clean water so we should not be wasting the water we have.
This is a pie chart of the usage of water around the world.
To stop wasting water you could make sure your showers or faucets aren’t running unless someone is using them, you could not just use water to use it ( water fights, a lot of water balloons, etc). If not saying don’t use water at all for fun but if you are using water for a lot of extra things you should try to cut down on the amount of water you’re using or just stop.
So many people in the world don’t have clean water so if you raised money for 1 well, that could change so many people’s lives because a well would be drilled and then they would have easy access to clean water. If you helped, people could have fresh water to drink, children and adults would stop dying, people would be healthier, animals would be healthier, everything would be cleaner, and a lot more people could live a happy life.
Today you learned about what the water crisis is, about Ryan Hreljac, and how we can help. I hope that more people in the world can start realizing this big issue and we can try and start to solve this problem. People should not be living with brown, bacteria infected water that causes them to die or be living with barely any water at all. What could you do to help?
