Lamia is a genus of projectile-hunting, mixed-reproduction Geanta species. While individual shapes/sizes differ between species, each is characterized by an evolved cheek cavity, a thin build, and three sets of appendages along the underbelly.
Crimson Varkolek
(Lamia rubens)
The Crimson Varkolek, Lamia rubens, is a medium-sized carnivorous species of varkolek typically residing in humid, acrid environments found in Pratoria. They are immediately recognizable by their enlarged cheek cavity (storing projectile darts) and their three sets of abdominal appendages used for both climbing trees (along with their prehensile tail) and for holding down half-deceased prey. Venomous darts fire from ventricular organs present near the epidermis and emerge as small, hollow bones which fill with hemotoxic venom as they develop; these are kept in internal quivers of around 50. These keen-eyed hunters acquire targets visually, accurately firing darts with circulatory system hydraulic pressure at ranges documented up to 35 feet. Re-ingested recovered projectiles from successful kills or misses are broken down for raw materials. These talented, opportunistic hunters litter acrid regions with the remains of their prey, nourishing expanding colonies of skeleton plants. Varkoleks reproduce both syngamically and parthenogenically, taking advantage of company when the opportunity arises or otherwise reproducing without a mate through the spores on the end of their tails. They typically grow to around 3.5 ft (1.05 m) tall and 5 ft (1.52 m) long without including tail and typically weigh around 150 lbs (68 kg).
