Carchara is a genus of retractable-jawed, parthenogenic Denta species sporting a large eye on either side of its head. While individual shapes/sizes differ between species, each is characterized by a long, jagged jaw and unique external ribcage that grows parthenogenic young after a thick sac forms around the rib spines.
Mottled Tibura
(Carchara maculosus)
The Mottled Tibura, Carchara maculosus, is a large carnivorous species of tibura typically residing in vast tropical oceans. They are especially notable for being a part of the only Denta genus that gives birth parthenogenically. They are immediately recognizable by their giant eyes, long and jagged retractable jaw, and external ribcage. This external ribcage grows a thick layer of skin (a sac, so to speak) in which young is grown over the course of one reproduction cycle. As having such a large appendage hinders movement, this species is known to form small social groups ("families") in which individuals not in the process of bearing young are in charge of hunting and those in the midst of the process focus on territory defense and individual health. Curiously, even while these organisms are asexual, two distinct types still exist: those that reproduce in the summer and those that reproduce in the winter. Each family unit/pod contains individuals of each type so as to ensure the survival of the species. They typically grow to around 40 ft (12.2 m) long and typically weigh around 25 tons (22680 kg).
