The History

of Women's

History Month

Why do we commemorate Women's History Month and how did it come about?

To acknowledge the importance of inclusive citizenship to a functioning democracy, Women's History Month honors American women and recognizes their specific accomplishments. At the request of Congress, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the week of March 7, 1982, as "Women's History Week." By 1987, "Women's History Week" grew to "Women's History Month." Presidents ever since have issued proclamations designating March as "Women's History Month."

The Library of Congress has pulled together a set of exhibits, events and resources related to Women's History Month for 2021. See it here.
