Will I know the results of the election on Election Night?

Though live-tracking poll returns may happen, a solid projection probably won't occur right away, and here's why:

  • Almost half of the states allow absentee ballots to be counted as long as they are post-marked on election day -- which means ballots will continue to flow in after Election Day

  • With an increase in absentee voting this year, expect this extended wait time to have a impact on election results in "swing states," where the result is likely to be close

In short, don't be surprised if official election results take longer than they have in previous elections.
