The fragile peace of the Rebuilding Era shatters with the massacre of five towns on the eastern border of Janmere. The Scarlet Brand cult is responsible, having used the deaths to fuel several dark rituals to create a terrifying new kind of tiefling, and they intend to both incite and survive the burning of the world by their demon overlord. They start small, striking only occasionally when the time is right for their rituals, before the opening of a portal to the Abyss allows them to leverage demon forces in large scale attacks, beginning the Demon War. They carve a path of destruction across Janmere, Glymyar, and several tribe territories, until a new, burned land stands in the midst of captured ground. The war is brutal, and Janmere and Glymyar are losing for much of it, but the reforging of Glymyar into Amalar and a grand alliance with several other tribes and nations bolster the Dûnan forces, and they begin to win out over the cult's army. In 1279 DA, a strike team of six warriors known as the Queensbane assassinate the cult's leader, and the demons are driven back to the Abyss with the portal closed behind them.
