Firemaw's Fangs are a series of sharp spires, jutting out from the ocean in a ring formation off the west coast of Altandor. They surround a deep crater in the seafloor, the center of which is a hotspot of geothermal activity that sends volcanic gases bubbling to the surface on occasion. The Luill Forest and the Usuo Islands ring the ocean around the Firemaw's Fangs in a broken circle, evidence of the violent forces that shaped the landscape in this area.
Firemaw's Fangs are said to be the last remnants of the Flameheart Volcano, a massive volcano that existed during the early centuries of Altandor and once served as the beating heart of the ancient nation of Pradena. The Age of Ashes began with its violent eruption, so powerful that the entire volcano and much of the surrounding landscape was completely wiped from the map, and clouds of ash covered Altandor as far east as the Heledhuin River. The Helion Sea filled in much of the remaining crater, leaving only a a few shattered remnants of the volcano's cone structure behind.
The Flameheart eruption is thought to have opened a rift to the fire plane deep under the ocean where the volcano once stood. This is believed to be the case of certain peculiarities in the behavior of the Weave in this region. Fire magic sometimes flares stronger than the caster intended, summer days may burn hotter than is natural, and on occasion sparks fall from dark storm clouds instead of raindrops. Very rarely, the waves within the ring of stone spires shine with the light of thousands of ghostly motes of flame dancing across the waters, thought to be the souls of those who perished in the blast.
