Dûnathel is a land of many languages, and while those who travel or trade regularly often share a common tongue, there are plenty of people who don't speak that language, and plenty of situations besides where one might abandon the common language to speak their native tongue.
Language points are used to represent the levels of fluency your character has in the many languages spoken throughout Dunathel. A level 1 character receives 4 language points in addition to a free fluent language, and for each point to their intelligence modifier, you have the opportunity to gain an additional 2 language points. Language points might also be acquired in other ways throughout the campaign, if your character spends their downtime to learn a new tongue. The more language points you spend on a language, the better your character understands it.
1 point - Beginner - you know a variety of simple phrases such as greetings, colors, emotions, and requesting directions to the bathroom
2 points - Conversational - you can hold a conversation on everyday subjects and convey reasoning for day-to-day arguments, decision making, and preferences.
3 points - Fluent - you can communicate complex thoughts and understand language-specific grammar and metaphors, and produce the associated accent well enough to pass for a native speaker if you are not one
