The Vara'tu are not technically a separate ethnicity, but their isolation from other Kepek and their drastically different appearance tend to lead others into believing they are. The Vara'tu are only found among the Kepeki royal family and are the result of exposing any Kepek egg to "royal sap" prior to it hatching - the ingredients of which are a closely guarded secret.
Vara'tu are enormous, even by Kepek standards, standing at an average of 10m tall, often with dark coloured scales, glowing markings and pupilless, glowing eyes. They also possess a pair of insect-like wings, though they are not capable of powered flight.
Any Kepek with even a single vara'tu parent will always be vara'tu, which ensures that all potential Empresses for the Kepek Commonwealth will also, always be vara'tu.

As all Vara'tu come from the same family, they all have the same family name: Vara'tu. Anyone who joins the family will also adopt this name, however, if the royal family looses the throne, they will also loose this title.
Vara'tu follow similar naming conventions to Bektepi Kepek, often naming their children after astronomical objects. Many Vara'tu will also give themselves a name when they come of age, usually relating to their markings.
