The Scout Sign is used when the Scout Promise is made.
The Scout Sign is also used instead of the Scout Salute when the person is not in full Scout Uniform.
The Scout Sign is made using your right hand.
Hold the fingers of your right hand like the illustration on the right (or below, if you are reading this on a small screen device).
The 3 fingers are like the 3 points of a Scout logo. They represent the 3 parts of the Scout Promise, which is:
Friends like to greet each other when they meet. If you see a friend across the street, you greet him by waving. This is a simple kind of salute.
Scouts have their own special way of saluting another Scout. We called this the "Scout Salute".
To salute, first make a Scout Sign on your right hand. Then, bring your right hand up quickly and smartly in a wide outward sweep. Your 3 fingers should stop near your right eye-brow. When you are ready to put down your hand, bring it down quickly and smartly.
Baden-Powell once wrote that "a salute is a sign between men of standing. It is a privilege to be able to salute and there is nothing slavish about it."
As a greeting
As a sign of respect
