Choose any 4 of the following activities:

  1. Explain the following: top-rope climbing, lead climbing, and bouldering.
  2. Explain how the difficulty of climbs is classified, and apply classifications to the rock faces or walls. Include photographs of some examples.
  3. Explain how the safety of a particular climbing area would be compromised by weather, visibility, the condition of the climbing surface, and any other environmental hazards.
  4. Describe the kinds of rope acceptable for use in climbing and rappelling, and show how to examine a rope for signs of wear or damage.
  5. List some ways to prevent a rope from being damaged.
  6. Do any 3 of the following:
    • Explain the importance of using verbal signals during every climb and rappel, and while bouldering. Demonstrate the verbal signals used by Climbers and Belayers.
    • Explain the importance of belaying Climbers and Rappellers and when belaying is necessary. Then demonstrate how to belay 3 different climbers ascending a climbing wall correctly and safely.
    • Climb a rock face or climbing wall, demonstrating good technique and using verbal signals with a Belayer.
    • Demonstrate the ability to tie any 2 of the following knots and give an example of how the knot is used in belaying or climbing.
      • Figure eight on a bight
      • Figure eight follow-through
      • Water knot
      • Double fisherman's knot
      • Safety knot
