Old Oak

Located in Cheapside and known locally as "Paddy Judge's" or "The Mucky Duck". Cheapside was originally called School Street. Premises were demolished to make way for the precinct through to Albion Street.

7 Apr 1861 - Census - Premises not named and is recorded on "Market Street", however it is strongly believed to be here. School Street (as Cheapside was once known) does not feature at all in the 1861 census, hence the assumption and coupled with the fact that the premises can be positively linked to the Garside family just 7 months later. Beerhouse keeper recorded as the widow Ann Garside & family. Ann had previously been at the Waggon & Horses.

18 Nov 1861 - Death Notice - Samuel Garside, aged 47, eldest son of Mrs Garside of the Old Oak Inn, Cleckheaton.

2 Apr 1871 - Census - School Street. Although premises not named other records suggest it was here. Landlord recorded as Ben Garside (son of the above Ann) & family.

18 Nov 1873 - Inquest - Old Oak Inn, School Street. Landlord recorded as Ben Garside

3 Apr 1881 - Census - The Old Oak, School Street. Landlord recorded as Thomas Woodcock & family. He was also a mechanic (fitter).

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Old Oak Inn, 12 Cheapside. Landlord recorded as Thomas Woodcock & family.

Sep 1897 - Brewery - Acquired by Springwell Brewery.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - Old Oak, Cheapside. Landlord recorded as Benjamin Coates & family.

2 Apr 1911 - Census - Old Oak Inn, 12 Cheapside. Landlady recorded as the widow Louisa Wood.

1920 - Electoral Register - Old Oak Inn, Cheapside. Occupants recorded as Joseph Joel & Ada Staniforth.

1925 - Electoral Register - Old Oak Inn, Cheapside. Occupant recorded as Arthur Wardman.

1930 - Electoral Register - Old Oak Inn, Cheapside. Occupants recorded as Arthur, Emma & Annie Wardman.

29 Sep 1939 - 1939 Register - Old Oak Inn, Cheapside. Licensee recorded as Patrick Judge.

1948 - Electoral Register - Old Oak Inn, Cheapside. Occupants recorded as Patrick, Kathleen & Ann Judge and Norman R & Anne Hibberd.
