BECTU/TUC Expenses Talks
As you may know, the mileage rates set by HMRC have remained unchanged for fifteen years. During this period, the costs associated with motoring – fuel, insurance, maintenance, and so forth – have risen dramatically. This discrepancy has created a significant financial burden for many of our members who are required to use their personal vehicles for work-related travel.
These outdated rates have become a convenient, albeit inadequate, justification for productions to resist increasing mileage allowances. The common catchphrase, "the rate is set by HMRC," effectively silences further discussion, leaving our members feeling as though they are, in effect, paying to perform their jobs.
The union has been actively engaged in discussions with HMRC, through the TUC, to address this long-standing problem, alongside the related issue of meal allowances. We have a further meeting scheduled shortly, and HMRC has specifically requested concrete evidence demonstrating the financial impact these outdated rates are having on our members.
To that end, we are asking for your assistance. We have prepared a brief snap survey designed to capture the extent to which members are personally out of pocket due to these inadequate mileage/meal rates. Your participation in this survey is crucial in providing the compelling evidence we need to advocate for a meaningful rate change. You are welcome to share the survey with the branch membership.
Please complete the survey by Friday, 20th March.
