In the UK, operating a cherry picker requires specific training and adherence to health and safety regulations. Appropriate training comes with valid certification, such as an IPAF PAL Card, which is essentially a picker driving licence, supported by an electronic logbook.
As well as personnel lifting, the TV & Film industry has adopted these machines as a base to mount lighting, camera, grip, SFX and other equipment.

Since 2019, First Option Safety has been leading consultations to raise awareness and establish safety standards regarding the use of Mobile Elevated Platforms (MEWP) for television and film productions.
The working group is formed of: safety consultants, enforcement officers, machine manufacturers, suppliers, broadcasters, streamers and, most importantly, crew and HODs.
Lighting Technicians were represented by a Gaffer who serves on the branch Health & Safety committee, and the document was also reviewed before release by other Gaffers and Best Boys.
