Enjoy our wacky plays of the week series! This idea originated directly from Scout feedback, requesting more opportunities to observe and practice the unusual plays that can occur in a football game. This page will continue to build as the season progresses.
Key Points:
Anytime there is a penalty during the play, utilize the Penalty Alert on the yardage scroller
Because this is a scoring play, the Arkansas Penalty is enforced on the ensuing try (in this case, a 2-point play) for Auburn. As a result, we are going to follow the dead-ball penalty protocol: Ref Event > Penalty > Declined > Confirm > Manually adjust the yard line on the XP/2-point try
Had this not been a scoring play, a 15-yard penalty (or half the distance to the goal) would've been tacked on to the end of the Auburn return
Key Points:
Enter a punt result BEFORE entering Fumble. Even though this ball was not fielded cleanly, this should still be a Punt Return
Similar to what we talked about in Week 8, you must enter a punt result before selecting turnover; otherwise Banjo will think you are entering a blocked punt
This isn't a traditional muffed punt or fumble return example. But for our purposes, this is still a punt return with a turnover alert
Key Points:
Offensive Recoveries do not trigger a post-TOV yardage screen, because there is no turnover. Always advance the ball as far forward (or backward) as the offense moves it
You don't need to confirm a yard line as long as the offense is still in possession and the ball is being advanced
The offense is still in possession until the football is clearly recovered by the defense
Alerts are critical to inform us that a big event is happening (Turnover, Score, etc.)
Key Points:
A fumble through the end zone a team is attempting to score in is a Fumble Lost because the result is a touchback. A Fumble Recovered by the team in possession in the end zone they are attempting to score in would be a Touchdown
Conversely, a fumble through the end zone a team is defending is a Fumble Recovered because that would result in a Safety. A Fumble Lost in the end zone that a team is defending would be a Touchdown for the Defense
Banjo is configured so that you can have an endless loop of turnovers if necessary
Key Points:
There are 3 alerts on this play: Score, Penalty, and Turnover
If the offense fumbles through the end zone they are trying to score in, and neither team recovers, that will always be a Fumble Lost
Clock Scout should assume the role of remembering which receiver caught the pass. Generally speaking, this is a good habit to get into, particularly for complex plays like this, where there is a lot of downtime
Key Points:
If a QB completes a pass to himself, the receiver will be Other
Fumble yard line should be close, but doesn't have to be exact
The recovery needs to be exact. The officials will always mark the recovery yard line
Key Points:
Enter a punt result (punt return or fair catch) BEFORE selecting Turnover Alert
If you select Fumble before selecting a punt result, Banjo will think you are entering a blocked punt
You will first select the yard line where the punt was muffed, and then where it was recovered. These will frequently be the same yard line, but not always
Key Points:
You MUST manually advance the down after confirming the penalty & play
Enter the play as it happens (pass complete, pass incomplete, interception, etc.)
This is not a lateral because the ball is being thrown forward
If this happens on 4th down, enter the play, move the yard line, change to 1st & 10 + switch possession to the other team
Key Points:
Plays like this are why it's important to select the correct recovering team, even on 4th Down. This is a Fumble Recovered
We need Score Alerts on potential safeties
Because there was also a penalty on this play, you will need Score, Turnover, and Penalty Alerts on the yardage screen AFTER selecting Fumble Recovered
Purdue vs Notre Dame Key Points:
Identify the play type right away. It's perfectly okay in this scenario to goi Rush > Back buttpon > Pass
Ball is thrown from the 16/17 yard line and caught at the 15, therefore it has to be a Pass play
Non-QB1 Passer!
Auburn vs Oklahoma Key Points:
A play doesn't necessarily have to be a designed fake for us to chart it as a fake
Anytime the punter is tackled, we will chart it as a Fake Punt
Do NOT use the Turnover Alert toggle for Turnover on Downs
Key Points
There are two backward passes, making this a Rush Play
R. Browne (#15) is the rusher
We need a Turnover and Score Alert
This play is a highly unusual exception where we WANT the Lateral Toggle checked even though it occurs behind the LOS
Key Points:
The punting team cannot legally punt the football off the ground. Therefore, anytime a punter kicks the ball away to avoid a negative play, we will call that a Fumble
Do not use the Penalty Alert toggle until you get to the yardage scroller
The recovery yard line does not need to be exact
Illegal Kicking is a loss of down penalty; therefore we will always decline it and enter the rest of the play as it occurs
Colorado St vs Washington Key Points:
Back out of the FG Formation as soon as the formation shift occurs
Don't forget to toggle Non-QB1
LSU vs Clemson Key Points:
Back out of the FG Formation as soon as you recognize the ball has been snapped directly to the Kicker
Be alert for pooch punts anytime a team lines up for a field goal near the midfield logo
