The moment that the FG team and kicker come onto the field, you must select the FG formation. 4 things can happen on field goals:
FG Made - the field goal is converted
FG Miss - the field goal is missed. This includes blocks or deflections where the football is NOT recovered by either team
FG Return (very rare) - a missed field goal is fielded by the defense and returned. An example of this would be the Iron Bowl Kick-Six play. Selecting this option will prompt you with the yardage screen, where you will indicate the END of the return
Fumble (Block) - blocked Field Goals and bad snaps will be discussed in more detail on the Advanced Plays page. Any FG that is blocked/deflected and recovered by either team will be a Fumble
NOTE: This is ONLY for Field Goals. Extra Points/PATs have a different screen that can only be accessed on the play immediately after a touchdown
The moment that the punt team comes onto the field, you must select Punt formation. 4 things can happen on punts:
Return - Receiving team fields punt (in the air or off of a bounce). The yardage scroller should be used to indicate the END of the return
Touchback - The punt goes into or through the endzone. The software will automatically place the ball on the 20-yard line after you confirm
Downed/OB/Fair Catch - While these are all different things, for our purposes, we group them because they are all scenarios where the ball is not advanced. The yardage scroller will be used to indicate the end of the kick and subsequently where the offense will start its ensuing drive
Fumble (Block)- will be discussed in more detail in a different video
Once you've identified Punt formation, the offense/punting team may decide to try a fake
This can be run or a pass, and you will enter the play as such
NOTE: The offense MUST be in a legitimate punt formation for it to be considered a fake
Use when a team lines up to go for 2 after a TD
You will be responsible for charting the SNAP
We do not care if this is a pass or run. The only relevant information is whether the attempt succeeds or fails
If a team lines up for 2 and then shifts into a regular PAT formation (this is rare, but some teams do this), just back out and switch to PAT
Use this when a team lines up in a PAT/FG formation after a TD
You will be responsible for charting the SNAP
If there is a botched snap and the PAT is aborted, leave it as a PAT failed. If the offense ends up scoring (which would technically be a 2-point conversion), back out and change the play to a 2-point Conversion > Successful (this is a very rare occurrence)
Returns - advance the yardage scroller to where the returner is tackled/pushed OB. We do not care about where the return starts
Clock Scout - make sure you start the clock on returns
Touchback - if the ball is kicked into or through the end zone
Any fair catch INSIDE the 25-yard line will be a touchback
Any Fair Catch OUTSIDE of the 25-yard line will be a return to the yard line where the kick was fielded
In the event of a surprise onside kick, hit the blue Onside Kick toggle on the kicking screen (rare)
Kickoffs out of bounds in NCAA football grant the receiving team possession of the ball on their OWN 35-yard line (unless otherwise noted by the official)
Select the return team's OWN 35-yard line for the preliminary spot. Then wait for the referee's announcement if the yardage is different or they confirm it is at the 35
By rule, if the ball goes out of bounds before the 35-yard line, it will be marked there. That is a very rare occurrence, but it can happen
You do NOT need to select Penalty Alert on Kickoff out of bounds
On the Kickoff screen, you will have the option to select Onside Kick Formation when applicable
This should be obvious when it is happening and will only happen when the kicking team is trailing in Q4
An Onside Kick has 3 results
Kicking Team Recovers - the kicking team recovers
Receiving Team Recovers - the receiving team recovers
Out of Bounds - kick goes out of bounds (utilize kickoff OB protocol)
