The yellow Ref Event button is available on most of the screens in Banjo. Selecting Ref Event will prompt you with 5 possible options:
Under Review - use this immediately when the play goes under review (this includes Targeting penalty reviews)
Penalty - use this to indicate a penalty on the play, most commonly for dead-ball and pre-snap penalties. Live ball penalties are entered in a different way, which will be explained below
Chains - use this when the referee calls for the chain gang to measure a 1st Down
Challenge - use this to indicate that one of the teams is challenging the ruling on the field. This is extremely rare in NCAA football, and you likely will never use this
No Play - this is an escape in case the referees, clock operator, TV person, etc., cause a stoppage in the middle of a play because of a mistake. Using this will take you back to the previous screen you were on before selecting Ref Event. It is highly unlikely you will ever use this
Regarding Penalties and Ref Events, the referee will always tell you the answer. Even if they make a mistake, what they say is what will happen. They are the cheat code. Listen to what they have to say, and apply the football knowledge that we know you have.
Utilize Formation > Ref Event > Penalty > Enter resulting Yard line
If the penalty is thrown on 4th Down and you truly do not know what formation the offense will come out in, then you can use the Ref Event button on the formation screen (this should be incredibly rare)
Common examples include false starts, delay of game, encroachment, too many men on the field, etc.
Banjo has the necessary logic built in to correctly output scenarios where the yardage gained on the penalty results in a 1st Down
If the penalty is declined, do NOT assign a team. Tap the red Decline button
There are multiple places where you can input a live ball penalty. The most common will be using the orange penalty toggle on the yardage screen and the passing screen
For penalties that occur on incomplete passes, you will need to utilize Ref Event > Penalty on the Confirmation screen. Because of the functionality of incomplete passes, you will not see the yardage selector screen, and therefore will not have another way to do this
As soon as you see a penalty on the field, select the penalty alert toggle
Enter the play as normal. If Penalty is toggled on, once you tap Next on the yardage screen, you will (1) need to select which team the penalty is on and then (2) select the post-penalty yard line
If the penalty is declined, do NOT assign a team. Tap the red Decline button
If the Defense jumps offside, it may constitute a "free play" for the Offense
In a free play scenario, you need to select a Play Type (Rush/Pass) BEFORE selecting the Penalty Alert
MOST free plays (like the example video), the Offense will chuck a deep pass because there is no consequence for an incompletion or turnover, but it does not have to be
Enter the play as normal and enforce the penalty as necessary
As always, if the penalty is declined, do NOT assign a team. Tap the red Decline button
All "dead ball" and "after the play" penalties must be tagged onto the most recent play. They should NOT be their own play/event. It is good practice to wait on the Confirmation screen for ~3 seconds after each play to chart these correctly
The primary use cases for this will be Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Unnecessary Roughness, and Taunting. Be on the lookout for situations where this can occur, especially in rivalry games
Utilize Ref Event > Penalty on the Confirmation screen
Due to the nature of these penalties, there will be instances where Banjo will output the incorrect down and distance. You MUST manually change this on the field map to reflect the current state of the game. The referee will always tell you what the new Down and Distance will be
Pre-snap penalties where the play is killed before it starts (i.e. False Start, Encroachment, Delay of Game, Too Many Men on the Field/in Formation) will still have their own No Play Penalty
Logically, a play can only go Under Review BEFORE the next play is snapped. Therefore, you should only utilize this function on the Formation or Play Design Screen
DO NOT EVER utilize the Under Review option from the Confirmation screen. Even if it's obvious that the play will be overturned, you MUST confirm each play exactly as it was originally ruled
If the play is overturned, you will be prompted to re-enter the previous play with the new ruling
If the call on the field "stands" or is "confirmed" select the Confirm button
It is crucial to your success as a live scout that you know how to do this. Incorrect reviews will dramatically affect your accuracy incentive(s)
By rule, every targeting penalty is reviewed
Utilize the Under Review process exactly as you would for any other type of play
Confirm the play as it is initially ruled on the field > Ref Event > Under Review
If overturned, enter the new, correct ruling on the field with or without the targeting penalty
Now it's your turn! Select a game from Training Banjo and enter this play completely, then overturn it, just like you would if you were at the game
Don't forget to set up your field map correctly
Don't worry about time & score or who represents which team. The important thing here is to get the reps and practice
NOTE: The referee's mic is broken, but it will be obvious what the overturned result is. The radio announcers are on it as well
